Evening Talk held by the West Midlands Regional Group
In 2013, St. Vincent and the Grenadines suffered a major tropical storm that caused widespread damage and landsliding across the island, severing the road network in several locations. Following the storm, the Windward Highway that connects the more prosperous southern region of St. Vincent with settlements in the North was extensively damaged, cutting settlements off from the rest of the island, preventing communities from accessing vital emergency resources and severely impacting the local economy.
Following the storm, Mott MacDonald have been working in partnership with the local Ministry for Transport & Works to improve the highway’s climate resilience by better understanding landslide risk, remediating and strengthening parts of the highway and providing capacity strengthening.
This presentation will focus on the landslide risk assessment completed along the island's Windward Highway and the design & construction of slope stabilisation measures for identified critical sites.
Jacob is a Chartered Engineer who worked on the project for several years as a geotechnical designer for Mott MacDonald. Jacob spent several months across the project on island completing the landslide risk assessment, supervising ground investigations and supporting construction.
Chris is a Chartered Engineering Geologist at Mott MacDonald with 20 years' experience in development, design and construction of infrastructure projects. Chris acted as project manager and geotechnical lead for the project and has extensive experience of landslide risk assessments and management both internationally and within the UK.
