CSI Geoscience Webinars

We are running three free webinars related to forensic geoscience each with a different subject focus (Science, History and Geography) for Key Stage 3 students. These interactive webinars are ideal for classroom viewing or enrichment activities and demonstrate how geoscience connects across subjects in exciting and meaningful ways.

Forensic Soil Analysis (Science Focused)

This webinar will include discussions of  context of the use of soil as evidence in criminal investigations; what is soil and why does it vary; soil trace evidence from crime scene and clothing / footwear; methods of analysis (colour, particle size, chemistry, minerals, pollen); hypothesis testing and evaluation. This webinar is aimed at Key Stage 3 students.

Points from the science curriculum:

Aims:

  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future.

Working Scientifically – Scientific attitudes

  • understand that scientific methods and theories develop as earlier explanations are modified to take account of new evidence and ideas
  • pay attention to objectivity and concern for accuracy, precision, repeatability and reproducibility

Working Scientifically – Experimental skills and investigations:

  • use appropriate techniques, apparatus, and materials during fieldwork and laboratory work

Chemistry - Earth and Atmosphere:

  • the rock cycle and the formation of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks
  • The composition of the Earth
