Overview
This fun lesson offers Key Stage 2 students the opportunity to learn about the properties of rocks in a fun, interactive way, using sweets to assess the physical attributes.
Firstly, ask children to describe the properties of different sweets in a labelled diagram focusing on colour, appearance, shininess, weight, texture. Having done this with sweets do the same activity with rocks and use the rock identification key to match rocks to the correct name.
Curriculum points: compare and group together different kinds of rocks on the basis of their appearance and simple physical properties.
