An introduction to the BDA site classification system, how (and why) sites are classified and what this means for GI working methods. The course will be split into the following topics:
- Background to Potentially Contaminated Land
- Hazardous Properties of Contaminants and Risk to GI Workers and the Environment
- Approach to Assessing Risk from Potentially Hazardous Substances (BDA / SISG Risk Classification System)
- Procedure for Site Risk Classification
- Communicating the Site Risk Classification
- Contaminated Land Risk Assessment & RAMS
- Group Task – Case Study
- Understanding of the BDA site classification system
- Knowledge about potentially hazardous substances and their impact
- Suitable methods of Site Risk Classification
- How to assess the changing Risk
Project Managers, Site Supervisors and Estimators, and anyone who needs an understanding of the risks presented by land contamination and the steps to classify and mitigate the risks. CPD for Chartered fellows.
This course will be taking place on 12 November 2025 from 09:00 to approximately 13:30 GMT, depending on audience participation.

Darren Makin - BSc (Hons) CSci MIEnvSc
Darren Makin is currently SOCOTEC UK's Ground Investigation (GI) division’s Geoenvironmental Lead specialising in environmental management and the investigation assessment of contaminated land. He is part of the Ground Investigation Core Technical Management Team and responsible for the delivery for all geoenvironmental aspects of the Ground Investigation operations ranging from conformance with all our technical procedures to and health and safety arrangements relating to working on potentially contaminated sites to ensure what they do is up to date with the standards and best practice.
Darren has been in the industry since 1998, when he was drawn into contaminated land in a graduate role as a Technical Coordinator at a contaminated land testing laboratory, then followed a career path into Consultancy as an Environmental Technician, Geoenvironmental Engineer and Contaminated Land Consultant with a few secondments on the way. Darren is a Chartered Scientist and a full member of IES.
