19 May 2026 | 09:00 - 13:00 | Virtual

Geotechnical monitoring is growing in popularity as a means of controlling the building of, and ongoing management of infrastructure assets, such as embankments and excavations. However, the teaching of geotechnical monitoring is still not commonplace in university degrees. In recent years the International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) has published a series of Standards that address geotechnical monitoring by field instrumentation, which cover methods of installing and reading the instruments that are used for measuring pore water pressures (piezometers) and deformations (inclinometers and extensometers). This course will introduce these Standards and how the content can be applied to monitoring the performance of infrastructure assets.

The key outcomes from the course will be:

  • understanding how to plan an effective monitoring programme using geotechnical instrumentation,
  • help choosing the right instruments for the measurements,
  • understanding how to install and read the instruments correctly.
  • reporting and presenting the measurements so they can be interpreted easily and enable efficient and effective decisions to be make.

The course is applicable to practising engineers and geologists who are involved in specifying and/or carrying out geotechnical monitoring programmes.

This course will be held virtually on 19 May 2025 at 09:00 to approximately 13:00 BST, depending on audience participation.

Joining details will be sent out the day prior, alongside any course materials that may be needed.

Dr Andrew Ridley

Andrew is a visiting Professor of Geotechnical Monitoring at Imperial College London and has more than 40 years' experience in geotechnical engineering. He is Chair of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE) Technical Committee on Field Monitoring in Geomechanics (TC220) and a past Chair of the British Geotechnical Association.
