This volume presents geophysical studies and reviews of the major Paleozoic orogenies that shaped Laurussia, the supercontinent that existed between 550 and 300 Ma ago and later amalgamated with Gondwana to form Pangaea. Several aspects of these orogenies are still debated and are addressed in this volume by presenting new geophysical data, reviewing existing studies and synthesizing insights into Laurussia’s Paleozoic orogenic evolution. Specific topics here are the mechanism of support of the present-day topography, the three-dimensional architecture of accreted terranes, the role of inheritance of tectonic structures in the evolution of orogens and passive margins, or the relationship between different orogenic episodes. This volume evaluates the strengths and limitations of geophysical methods, explores their integration with geological data and identifies future research priorities to further illuminate the processes that shaped Laurussia and its transition into Pangaea.
