The Albertine Rift Valley forms the northern sector of the Western Arm of the East African Rift System (EARS) and is one of the best examples of active early continental rifting in the world today. This Memoir draws together a variety of topics, or themes, ranging from structural geomorphology, to hot springs with their associated tufa-travertines, modern-day sedimentary depositional environments and examples in rift-fill outcrop, to ways of establishing a chronostratigraphic framework that correlates with global glacial–interglacial climatic cyclicity since the Pliocene. It is based on a series of original geological field surveys, undertaken for petroleum exploration companies and Government agencies over an eight-year period. These surveys, until now, have remained piecemeal views of the Lake Edward and Lake Albert basins, but here they are drawn together to provide a holistic narrative for the first time.
