The establishment and continued development of a magnetic polarity time scale has provided an important global time framework for use in conjunction with biostratigraphy and radio metric dating. This special report gives a comprehensive summary of the fundamentals, methods and applications of magnetostratigraphy, including recommendations for standards in nomenclature, field procedures, and documentation of data. Cenozoic and Mesozoic polarity time scale are considered in detail and the less-extensive information available for the Palaeozoic and Precambrian also is reviewed. Examples of application to marine sequences, terrestrial sequences and climatic changes are given.
