Wireline log interpretation has great potential for solving a diversity of geological problems in a range of different subsurface geological environments. With the immense cost and practical problems involved in recovering core from deeply buried sequences, the major advances discussed in this volume to geological research, both within academia and industry, are clearly of great importance, and the field remains one in which research and development of new tools and interpretative techniques will be keenly followed. Many of the papers in the volume, however, stress the importance of correlating and calibrating log-derived data with traditional geological observations, and of incorporating such geological data to produce a meaningful geological interpretation of the log measurements. We hope that this volume will act as a small milestone that will mark the status of geological applications of wireline logs in the late 1980s, and that it will be the first in a series resulting from further meetings that will follow the progress in this important frontier field of the geological sciences.
