The World Heritage ‘Jurassic Coast’ Site in Dorset and East Devon has helped publicize the remarkable geological record in Jurassic rocks. Research on the rapidly evolving ammonite faunas continues to improve Jurassic stratigraphical resolution and ammonite biostratigraphy is used as the reference stratigraphical scale in this Special Report.
Onshore stratigraphical correlations for Britain and Ireland are presented in a series of charts containing 206 lithostratigraphical columns, across six chapters, augmented by notes that provide a detailed point-by-point rationale. Several new ammonite subzones are proposed, while ammonite biohorizons, providing the highest temporal biostratigraphical resolution currently achievable, are documented in some chapters.
Jurassic rocks have an extensive development in offshore areas around Britain and Ireland. More than 8000 wells provide a greater understanding of their geographical extent, and data for a high-resolution microfossil biostratigraphy correlated to ammonite records, genetic sequence stratigraphy and seismic correlation information. These data constrain the 85 lithostratigraphical columns and accompanying text that cover the >60 sedimentary basins developed offshore of Britain and Ireland.
