Purposes and Objects
The Geological Society is a UK charity, and by law everything we do must be in line with our charitable Purposes and our Objects. Our Purposes as defined by Section 3 of the Charities Act 2011 are ‘the advancement of education’ and ‘the advancement of science’. Our Objects set out in more detail how the Geological Society will fulfil our Purposes.
The Objects, which until 2025 were set out in our Byelaws, are now included in our revised Royal Charter:

2. The Geological Society of London is instituted for the purpose of "advancing and sharing knowledge of planet Earth and beyond for the benefit of humanity".
This remit is discharged by:
2.1. improving knowledge and understanding of the history, structure, constitution and dynamics of the Earth and its processes:
2.2. promoting all forms of education, awareness and understanding of the Earth and their practical applications for the benefit of the public globally;
2.3. and promoting professional excellence and ethical standards in geoscience for the public good.

Strategy
Our strategy sets out our priorities - what we plan to achieve during the next ten years and how we will achieve it. Our Strategic Plan sets out how we will support and promote:
1. The advancement and application of geoscience
Being the inclusive and collaborative home for UK geoscience, supporting the advancement and application of geoscience through the sharing of knowledge and insight, especially through publishing, information services, conferences, and professional training.
2. Professional excellence and ethical standards
Supporting the professional development of geoscientists, including support for pathways towards Chartership.
3. Geoscience education and careers in geoscience
Inspiring and informing future geoscientists, and providing resources for pupils and educators.
4. Equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility in geoscience
Providing a clear commitment and path to better equity, diversity, inclusion and accessibility across the geoscience community and within the organisation.
5. Quality of output and effectiveness of operations through technology, systems and resources
Using available technology more fully and effectively, ensuring our facilities are fit-for-purpose, deliver timely, accurate and useful information, and optimise processes.
