The purpose of this field guide is twofold: firstly, to provide a general introduction to the islands geology and secondly to provide descriptive accounts of locations which can be visited to see this geology.

The majority of the localities described are readily accessible both by road and the coastal footpath. The itineraries are arranged in a clockwise sequence around the island beginning in the northeast. If time is limited, it is suggested that Whitecliff Bay. Sandown Bay. Chale Bay. Hanover Point and Alum Bay are the most important sites. The small but excellent Museum of Isle of Wight Geology. High Street. Sandown should also he visited.

Reprinted 2008 and 2015.
