National Coal Museum, Wakefield

EVENT CLOSED

The Northwest Regional Group of the Geological Society is hosting a summer field trip to the National Coal Museum with a focus on 'Methods of coal mining in the northwest and their decommissioning'.

Although we are slightly out of area, we consider the National Coal Mining Museum a great source of information for a previous industry steeped in geology. We have arranged two special events which will be a trip down the drift mine at 11am (nominal charge), with a lecture at 2pm.

These are events not usually provided at this facility and have been arranged specially for the Geological Society of London. There will be plenty of activities for all of the family, including going down the coal mine (not the drift), visiting the pit ponies, a nature trail, a small indoor soft play area, an outdoor play area, and there is an exhibition on the “Hidden Life of Coal Traders”.

Time

10.30am for 11.00am - Trip down the drift mine

2.00pm - Lecture

The Drift Mine Tour

The Museum are putting on a special tour for us at 11am (to be ready by 10:30am) which is not available to the general public.  This involves walking along the drift mine into the seam which has been worked.  There will a nominal charge on this (£5), however we think this is well worth it.

Contact Nik Reynolds to ensure your place on the drift mine tour.  If we get more than 19 people, a second tour will be arranged.  Currently we have 11 people booked!   The Museum has recommended a min age of 13yrs but this may be reduced if needed/appropriate.

Further Information

This event is open to all members as well as the whole family - grandchildren, children, parents and grandparents. There are plenty of things for all the family at the museum, including petting the pit ponies, nature walks, inside museum exhibits, riding the mine cage to the seam (min age 5yrs), as well as an indoor play area.

We will also be providing a facepainting/glitter tattoo artist for children of members. (Free with membership card).

If you haven't a current membership card, login in to your MyGSL account to download one. Any problems contact Nik Reynolds or a member of the committee on the day.

Please note that all dates and venues are provisional and may be amended due to unforeseen circumstances.
