Event type:
Conference
Organised by:
British Geological Survey, Marine Studies Group
Venue:
British Geological Survey, Murchison House, Edinburgh
Event status:
EVENT CLOSED
Registration Closes 1 September

Submarine canyons are growing in interest due to their complexity, the variety of processes taking place and the resulting diversity of their habitats. The aim of INCISE is to bring together the community of submarine canyon scientists to stimulate cross-discipline discussions, leading to integrated research tackling the essential questions that will increase our understanding of these systems.

Co-hosted by the British Geological Survey and the National Oceanography Centre, and Sponsored by the Marine Studies Group of the Geological Society, the symposium will combine traditional conference-style oral and poster presentations with a set of break-out working-group discussions.

Conference Themes and Working Groups

Within INCISE, we aim for an integrated study of submarine canyons, and for the stimulation of cross-disciplinary discussions. The themes for the 2nd International Symposium on Submarine Canyons directly resulted from the discussions held at the first symposium in Brest in 2012:

  1. Canyon processes in the space-time continuum (formation, evolution, circulation)
  2. Natural vs. anthropogenic disturbance in submarine canyons: processes, scale and impacts on biological communities
  3. Patterns in submarine canyons: role of scale and heterogeneity (in morphology, habitats, hydrography)
  4. Submarine canyon conservation and policy development
  5. New ways to study submarine canyons: integrated programmes, new technologies and coordinated monitoring efforts.
In the longer term, INCISE hopes to develop a number of more permanent working groups, joining the scientists interested in particular topics of submarine canyon research. During INCISE2014, we will initiate this process, starting from the above topics that came out of previous discussions. However, we are also open to further suggestions from the INCISE community. If you would like to suggest a particular topic for a working/discussion group, please let us know on [email protected].
