The walk starts from the Thames Barrier in Charlton, south-east London and will go upstream along the south side of the Thames to Greenwich town centre. It will reveal the fascinating earth science stories hidden below the concrete foundations of a disappearing industrial landscape.
There are traces of past climate change and tales of human endeavour are made clear through the geology on London such as: where the Blackwall Tunnel crosses beneath the Thames near the O2 and how the affects of the ice age complicated its original construction.
The walk is about six km (3¾ miles) along paths (some rough). We aim to have lunch in the Cutty Sark pub on Ballast Quay, before concluding the walk into the town centre. The trip should finish by about 3pm close to Greenwich town centre and public transport.
No prior geological knowledge necessary. Easy walking on the flat.

Directions: Nearest station to Thames Barrier is Charlton with 6 trains/hour from London Bridge (2 from Charing X, 2 from Cannon St and 2 from Luton), c. 15 mins to walk to the Thames Barrier Visitor Centre; nearest underground station North Greenwich (Jubilee Line).
From there take the 161 or 472 from Stop A to ‘Greenwich Trust School’. It is then a 5-minute walk.
