Long-term co-evolution of life and the planet (NERC research programme)

The Earth that sustains us today has arisen out of planetary scale co-evolution of the physical and biological worlds. The complexity of these interactions necessitates a multidisciplinary ‘Earth System Science’ approach. Three years on from ‘Life and the Planet 2011’, this two-day meeting will explore advances in our understanding of the coupled evolution of life and the planet.

The four main themes of this meeting are:

  • Precambrian origins of the modern Earth System
  • Key events in the evolution of marine ecosystems
  • Geological constraints on biological evolution in the polar region
  • Descent into the Icehouse during the Cenozoic Era

Keynote speakers include:

  • Professor Ian Fairchild, University of Birmingham
  • Professor Peter Harries, University of South Florida
  • Dr Brian .T. Huber, Smithsonian Institute
  • Professor Lee Kump, Penn State University
  • Professor Andy Ridgwell, University of Bristol
  • Sir Crispin Tickell
