During this field trip, we will explore the geological periods of the Carboniferous and Triassic. The photo above is looking south towards Glastonbury Tor. Taken from a point on the Lower Carboniferous outcrop, looking across a valley which is in the coal measures. The small ridge towards the top represents the Black Rock Limestone which has been thrust over the Coal Measures. The Ebbor thrust is mapped by the BGS as running along the base of this small ridge
Morning Session: Deer Leap, Carboniferous sequences, with limestones of the Lower Carboniferous. and then crossing into the Upper Carboniferous with “Millstone” Grit and then Coal Measures and the Cheddar Wells thrust belt.
Afternoon Session: Ebbor Gorge and the Wookey Hole area to view some good examples of the Triassic Dolomitic Conglomerate and then to look at features in the Carboniferous Limestone and a coal shaft dating from 1871.
