The Western Regional Group is pleased to welcome Associate Professor Nem Vaughan as she discusses the future of carbon capture and storage, and how it will be used in order to reach net zero emissions. The talk will cover the role of carbon dioxide removal methods in achieving global (and national) net zero targets and the use of carbon dioxide removal to recover the projected overspend of the global carbon budget by the end of the century. Carbon Capture and Storage is a vital part of two types of carbon dioxide removal technologies: Direct Air Capture and Carbon Storage (DACCS) and Biomass Energy with Carbon Capture and Storage (BECCS). The projected scale of these technologies in global future scenarios to 2100, as well as national scenarios to 2050 will be contrasted with the real-world feasibility challenges and opportunities these technologies face.

Dr Nem Vaughan, School of Environmental Sciences at University of East Anglia
Associate Professor Nem Vaughan is an interdisciplinary scientist at the School of Environmental Sciences at UEA. She researches carbon dioxide removal methods, their feasibility and role in national and global net zero emission targets. Dr Vaughan co-leads the Reaching Zero Emissions theme of the Tyndall Centre for Climate Change Research and is Principal Investigator on a 4-year NERC-funded consortium project assessing the feasibility of afforestation and biomass energy with CCS.
