‘What caused the extinction of the world’s most iconic reptiles, the dinosaurs, and the rise of the mammals?’
In 1980 Luis Alvarez and colleagues published a paper proposing that an asteroid hit the Earth 66 million years ago, causing a huge extinction and wiping out the dinosaurs. This became known as the ‘Impact Hypothesis’ and was widely disputed. It took several years but finally the site of the impact was discovered off the coast of Mexico.
In 2016 a team of scientist studied the impact site, known as the Chicxulub crater, by drilling deep into the ocean floor. So historic was this research that a BBC documentary, presented by Professor Alice Roberts, was broadcast about this exciting scientific project and its implications for understanding the extinction event. Join Professor Alice Roberts, host of the event, in welcoming Professor Joanna Morgan (Imperial College London), co-chief scientist of the drilling team, who will reveal more about current research on the 200 km wide crater
