SWRG Field Trip to Coombe Martin Silver Mines

27th July 2019

We will aim to arrive on site at 10:30, meeting at Mine Tenement.

The site address is:

Mine Tenement
Bowhay Lane
Coombe Martin
North Devon
EX34 0JN

We will meet at the end of Bowhay Lane, NGR SS 58892, 46430.

This is an opportunity to visit  Mine Tenement, believed  to be the site of Fayes Mine, one of the few sites in the South West offering underground mine visits. It is one of the celebrated Kings’ mines of Coombe Martin, first documented in 1292, its last recorded output was in 1880 when it became unviable to operate. Combe Martin Silver Mine Research And Preservation Society have been working since 1991 to preserve and restore the abandoned workings.

Access to the mine is via a set 14 ladders down a shaft therefore a reasonable level of fitness and sturdy foot ware is required. Old clothes are optional but expect to get suitably dirty! The mine is able to provide a limited amount of equipment, however they are short on helmets. Could those who wish to attend please inform of what equipment (or not) they have access to so arrangements can be made as necessary. A spare set of clothes may be required as there is an adit level which can be reached at the time of year we are going, however this will mean getting thigh deep in water.

The visit is anticipated to last 4-5 hours.
