A rock slope stability case study

Until production ceased on 31 March 1999, Coles Quarry was one of six extractive sites operated by RMC Aggregates (South West) Limited, and produced both roadstone and concrete aggregates from the Carboniferous Limestone. Owing to inherent environmental problems at Coles quarry, RMC had planned since the late 1980s to transfer its local limestone production operations to a new site, Freemans Quarry. However, a final, limited-life extension to Coles Quarry was required in order to maintain production whilst Freemans Quarry underwent development.

An original application for a south-eastern extension of Coles Quarry was submitted in November 1991. However, in January 1992 these development proposals were called into question by a substantial planar failure. This presentation summarises work to characterise, analyse and resolve problems associated with the potential for planar failure at Coles Quarry, to enable the stabilisation, safe extension and restoration of the south-eastern excavation.

Variants of this presentation were last given around 15 years ago, and this updated version includes the more recent history of the quarry.
