This evening's talk will describe the detrital and authigenic clay assemblages of the London, Hampshire and Weald Basins, their origins, abundances and the reasons for their distribution.
Clay assemblages are largely known from X-ray diffraction data and this will be used to show regional characteristics and trends. The formation and significance of very early diagenetic glaucony, berthierine, smectite and kaolinite will be examined and illustrated using back-scattered electron microscope images.

After studying at Imperial College Dr Jenny Huggett went on to work for BP for seven years. For nearly 30 years now she has operated as Petroclays, a consultancy specializing in clay science and diagenesis, with a sideline in geoviticulture. Jenny has always kept one foot in academia, being an associate of the Natural History Museum for many years.
In all she has notched up over 60 publications. She was also involved in the Oxford-Shell Mudrock Observatory project for four years, and has acted as a mentor to numerous PhD students and early career scientists.
