The evening will start with The Regional Group AGM.

This will be followed by our first talk of 2018, which marks the start of the Geological Society's Year of Resources, for which we welcome Malcolm Brown (President of the Geological Society).

In his talk, Malcolm will explain the fundamental requirements necessary for the formation of hydrocarbon reserves and the factors that affect the chances of successfully locating and developing worthwhile resources. Are the geological conditions conducive to the formation of hydrocarbons? If so, have such deposits formed in sufficient quantities to be worth utilising? And can they be accessed? These are some of the issues which Malcolm will discuss.

Our speaker:

After graduating from Kingston Polytechnic (1976), with a BSc in Geology, Malcolm worked in Libya and Saudi Arabia before completing an MSc in Petroleum Geology at Imperial College (1982). He worked at British Gas/BG Group for over 30 years as it evolved from state owned utility to successful international business and was Executive Vice President, Exploration. Malcolm became a Fellow in 1982, served on Council between 2009 and 2012 and became a Chartered Geologist in 2013. He took over as President of the Society in 2016.
