Raw Materials Empowering Sustainability: Mind the Gap - Value chains

Understand key features of the ‘raw materials journey’ and of global supply chains. Understand value chain concepts, and opportunities and barriers for sustainability. Critically assess governance and policy approaches.

Learning Objectives

    • Describe the typical processes which mineral raw materials undergo on their journey from mine to end-product
    • Understand key features of global mineral supply chains, and their implications for sustainability and social justice
    • Understand the meaning and significance of value chains and associated concepts (value creation, resource rent, etc)
    • Analyse the opportunities and barriers these present for improving raw material sustainability, including through responsible mining and circular economy approaches
    • Critique whole-chain approaches to sustainability of raw materials, including material stewardship, chain-of-custody, responsible procurement, and how these interface with responsible mining and circular economy
    • Critically evaluate policy approaches to value chains and supply chains
    • Evaluate the strengths and weaknesses of typical current supply chain attributes (high level of globalisation, "just-in-time" supply, etc.), and discuss potential synergies and tensions between supply chain resilience and sustainability
