Raw Materials Empowering Sustainability: Mind the Gap - Where in the world can we obtain critical minerals?

Define critical raw materials and identify key ones for the energy transition. Understand the settings in which they are found, constraints on exploration and production, and related ESG issues.

Learning Objectives

  • Define critical raw materials, and understand the economic importance and supply constraint factors driving their identification
  • Identify key critical minerals for the energy transition, including lithium, cobalt, REEs, PGMs, indium, etc.
  • Discuss the geological settings in which they are found
  • Understand constraints on their exploration and production (physical, economic, environmental and social)
  • Explore the key operational / ESG issues regarding these materials, and why these materials are critical
  • Analyse the role of geologists in alleviating some of these issues, e.g., innovation in exploration, processing efficiency

Programme

This session will be held as a lecture followed by a Q&A session with the speaker.
