Raw Materials Empowering Sustainability: Mind the Gap - Future geoscience for sustainability

Understand the role of geoscience for the UN SDGs. Evaluate possible future energy and raw material scenarios. Analyse future geoscience skills and leadership requirements. Evaluate public perceptions of mining/scope for change.

Learning Objectives

• Define a ‘just’ transition, and consider competing notions of such a transition
• Understand the role of georesources and other aspects of geoscience in delivering the UN SDGs
• Outline and critically evaluate possible future global energy and raw material scenarios, including future roles of hydrocarbons, minerals and uses of the subsurface (e.g., for CCS, radioactive waste disposal, gas storage…)
• Analyse the geoscience skills required for a more sustainable future, and barriers to these (including degree programme closures, current content of programmes, etc.)
• Discuss potential leadership roles for senior geoscientists of the future
• Critically evaluate public and stakeholder perceptions of the mining sector, and consider how it can reposition itself in response to the sustainability challenge (compared with hydrocarbons companies rebranding as energy companies, for example)
