The high plateau of The Mounth (Eastern Grampians) and the adjacent lowlands of Strathmore have been noticeably neglected in recent Quaternary research on the British-Irish ice sheet. The geomorphic record of the last ice sheet in the area reflects the interaction of ice from the western Highlands and Gaick/Cairngorms. 

Spectacular streamlined bedforms show how these ice masses converged to form the lateral margin of a major ice stream that occupied Strathmore flowing north-eastwards towards the North Sea. Glacial landsystems, particular related to meltwater activity along the Highland edge, record progressive deglaciation and unzipping between these two ice sources. 

Further deposits and landforms in Glen Clova reflect the active recession of the eastern Highland ice leading to extended valley glaciers and the possible formation of glacial lakes in the glen. The Mounth also has excellent evidence of the regrowth of local glaciers and icefields during the Loch Lomond Stadial (LLS) and rock slope failures (RSF) of unknown age.
