NWRG BGS UK Geoenergy Observatories

The BGS’s UK Geoenergy Observatories project will establish new centres for world-leading research into the subsurface environment. The knowledge they generate will contribute to the responsible development of new energy technologies both in the UK and internationally. 

As part of this project, the Natural Environment Research Council (NERC) and the BGS are studying two research field sites: 

  • The Glasgow Geothermal Energy Research Field Site, in Glasgow, will study geothermal energy in mine-water heat; and 
  • The Cheshire Energy Research Field Site will study the geology around Ince Marshes for energy science research. 
The field sites will have a network of deep and shallow boreholes containing state-of-the-art listening devices, which will act like stethoscopes to measure precisely the state of the underground in its natural condition and any changes in great detail. 

John’s lecture will focus mainly on the Cheshire Energy Research Field Site, which aims to research new, low-carbon technologies and foster world class science and innovation. 

Speaker

John Midgely has worked for over 30 years in the energy sector and is currently employed as Technical Manager for the BGS UK Geoenergy project (formerly Energy Security & Innovation Observing System for the Subsurface - ESIOS). 

His work is a combination of operations geology, drilling engineering and technology management.
