Why does the topography and scenery of the Lake District vary so much from rolling Kendal foothills to jagged Central Fell mountain peaks, to Skiddaw's majestic yet rounded mountain scenery in the north? Travel through almost 500 million years of geological history - a story of the closure of ancient oceans, volcanoes, Himalayan-scale mountain ranges, tropical seas, swamps, deserts & ice ages.

Led by Dr Annette McGrath, the course provides a thorough introduction to the geology of the Lake District, via:
  • A series of PowerPoint presentations.
  • A practical session to look at a large selection of rocks, minerals, fossils, thin sections and geological maps from the Lake District. A large selection of rocks, minerals and fossils from around the world are also available for students to handle.
  • A session is also devoted to economic geology - mines, quarries, building stones, minerals, graphite etc.
  • The course includes a day field trip to examine Skiddaw and Borrowdale Volcanic Group rocks and glacial features in Borrowdale.

The course includes a geological trip so please wear suitable clothes!
