Endorsed Training Course: Geology - the Basics: Rocks, Minerals and Fossils
Date:
17 - 19 November 2017
Venue:
Higham Hall College, Bassenthwaite Lake, Cockermouth, Cumbria
Event status:
EVENT CLOSED
Led by Dr Annette McGrath, the course provides a thorough but basic introduction to rocks, minerals and fossils provided via:
- A series of PowerPoint presentations,
- Practical sessions to look at a large selection of rocks, minerals, fossils, thin sections and geological maps, with lots from the UK plus many other samples from around the world.
- A morning visit to Keswick Museum to examine a selection of their rocks, minerals and fossils from the UK and specifically the Lake District, as well as John Ruskin’s private geological collection, all of which will be brought out of storage especially for course participants. Although Ruskin is best known as a Victorian philanthropist and patron of the arts, he was also an avid geological collector and writer. He was a close friend of the leading geologist and natural theologian William Buckland, a true, if quirky, pioneer of his day.
- After the museum visit, the course includes a short afternoon trip through Borrowdale, or another locality close by, to have a brief look at large-scale geological features in the landscape.
