A major rainstorm affecting the Seoul Region in July 2011 triggered over 140 landslides at Mount Umyeon, resulting in 16 fatalities and major disruption to roads and infrastructure in the area.

In response to these events the Seoul Metropolitan Government initiated a series of landslide and flood hazard assessments and implemented extensive mitigation works throughout the 31 basins present at Mount Umyeon, with all restoration works completed by the end of 2012. In recognition of the fast track manner in which the works were implemented, Arup were subsequently engaged in 2016 to undertake a Peer Review of the works.

This talk will provide an overview of the 2011 landslides together with details of the hazard assessment, mitigation works and design checks subsequently undertaken.
