Tour details
Visit the oldest geological society in the world, located in one of the most important buildings in the history of science. Charles Darwin, Charles Lyell, and Roderick Murchison, along with many others, have been Fellows of the Geological Society.
The Geological Society has been located at Burlington House on Piccadilly since 1874. Our Grade II* listed building includes two Libraries and various meeting rooms, housing collections of international importance in the history of geology.
On the tour you will learn about many of the most important discoveries in geology as well as one of the most famous hoaxes in the history of science. You will also see the very first geological map of England & Wales by William Smith, also known as ‘The Map that Changed the World’, and hear some of the stories that have made the Society what it is today.
The tour will last between 60 and 90 minutes and will be led by one of our knowledgeable librarians.
There is a short flight of steps to get into the building, but once inside there is a lift that can be used by those with restricted mobility.
