Tunelling projects are associated with a wide range of geotechnical risks. The potential to cause harm linked to these risks also vary quite widely, as do the likelihood of occurrence. For successful projects, all significant risks need to be carefully and appropriately identified, assessed, mitigated, managed, communicated and transferred.

Individual geotechnical risks can best be mitigated at different stages of the works by a combination of the actions by the Client/Owner, the Designer or the Contractors. Collaborative working and good communication between all parties concerned is important to ensure a successful outcome.

Using a backdrop of the Crossrail project and other interesting international case histories, Dr Menkiti will discuss some of the geotechnical risks associated with tunnelling activities in dense urban environments and how they usually mitigated or managed. Important lessons learned will be drawn out and important strategies highlighted.
