The Engineering Group of the Geological Society of London

The 23rd Annual Glossop Award presentation will be followed by The 20th Glossop Medal lecture by Jean Hutchinson (Visiting Research Fellow, School of Earth & Environmental Sciences, University of Portsmouth). 

Jean will be presenting a talk on ‘Building the engineering geology process model: Extending our understanding of rock slope instability mechanisms using remotely sensed data’.

What is it?

The Glossop Award is a prestigious award made annually to an outstanding young engineering geologist or geo-environmentalist.

The winner will receive up to £500 which can be used towards 

  • A Geological Society Special Publication of their choice 
  • Attendance at a training course or field meeting supported or run by the Engineering Group. 

The winner will also be offered the option of joining the Engineering Group of Geological Society Committee for one year.

Who can apply?

Candidates must be 

  • A Fellow of the Geological Society 
  • Training towards Chartership or already a Chartered Geologist or Scientist
  • Have no more than 8 years post-graduate experience on the date of presentation.


The successful candidate will present their work at the Glossop Meeting, before the Glossop Medal lecture.

The meeting will be held at the Royal Institution, London on 13 November 2019. 

How to apply

  1. Download the Flyer and complete the application form contained within.
  2. Provide a 2-page abstract (can include text and figures) on the theme: “Communication of Risk and Opportunity in Engineering Geology”

  • Notification of shortlist: 30 June 2019
  • Presentation by finalist: 24 July 2019
