The Geological Society is pleased to announce the winners of the 2016 Earth Science Week photography competition, ‘Earth Science in Action.’ Based on the theme of this year’s
Earth Science Week (8 - 16 October), the images will all feature in a 2017 calendar.
The competition, open to all, asked for images featuring the geology of the UK and Ireland. The twelve winners, which include photographs taken in Pembrokeshire, the Isle of Skye and Benbulbin, will be on display at the Geological Society throughout Earth Science Week (8-16 October).
‘Once again, we were so impressed by the range and quality of the photographs we received’ says Geological Society Director of Policy and Communications, Nic Bilham. ‘Earth Science Week is a celebration of the unique geo-heritage of the UK and Ireland, and all of the winning images reflect this.
‘We chose ‘Earth Science in Action’ as this year’s theme to celebrate the recent launch of our ‘Geology Career Pathways’ website, illustrating the huge range of options open to those who study the geosciences. So many of the competition entries demonstrated a love of exploration and the outdoors, which is at the heart of many geological careers.’
First place in the competition goes to Tim Hoe for ‘Doors Portrait II: Reveal’, (pictured) depicting some stunning geology on the Pembrokeshire coastline.
‘The conditions were dark and awkward with sea mist and spray coating the camera and lens’ he says. ‘I lost the foot of my tripod somewhere in the large stones underfoot. There are three sources of light here: the low ambient light of the scene and two LED flashlights; one directed by me beside the camera and one by my friend.’
Second place is awarded to Catherine Inglis for a photograph taken during a rope access risk assessment on Salisbury Crags, Holyrood Park in Edinburgh. Third prize goes to James Orr for ‘Climbing Ben Nevis.’
Earth Science Week 2016 takes place from 8 - 16 October, with events taking place across the UK and Ireland to celebrate our unique geo-heritage.
