Evening lecture by Duncan Scott.
This talk will give an overview of the Emerson’s Green landfill reclamation project (near Bristol) which is being undertaken by Vertase FLI Ltd to enable redevelopment of the site for a residential end-use. The landfill contained approximately 60,000m3 of commercial/industrial waste buried within a former valley during the 1980s and 90s on a 'dilute and disperse' basis.
Remediation measures were implemented by Vertase FLI Ltd to manage unacceptable risks of both harm to future site users and pollution of the environment posed by contamination within the buried waste.
In addition to managing risks posed by contamination, the remediation works were designed to manage risks of ground instability, culminating in the creation of a geotechnically suitable development platform for use by follow-on contractors during the construction phase of the residential development.
The regulatory, technical and operational challenges experienced during design and delivery of the project are considered within the talk, along with some of the innovative solutions adopted by the project team.

Duncan Scott
Duncan Scott is the Technical Director of Vertase FLI Ltd. He has a PhD in Groundwater Remediation from the University of Nottingham and is a Chartered Fellow of the Geological Society of London. He is also a Registered Ground Engineering Professional.
Specialising in the assessment and remediation of land contamination in the private sector over the last 12 years, Duncan has built up a wealth of experience in the multidisciplinary field of environmental remediation and its interface with ground engineering.
