Gain an overview of our country's rich and varied geological heritage on a trip through over three billion years of time - with a basic introduction to the main concepts of geology. The course provides a thorough introduction to the geology of Britain provided via:

  • A series of PowerPoint presentations
  • A series of practical sessions interspersed where relevant with the presentations, to look at a large selection of rocks, minerals, fossils, thin sections and geological maps from across Britain. A large selection of rocks, minerals and fossils from around the world are also available for students to handle
  • A morning field trip to investigate landscape-scale Ordovician-age geology in the Lake District, as well as a visit to examine the intrusive contact between the Threlkeld microgranite and Skiddaw Group in Threlkeld Quarry, followed by a visit to examine the vast geological collection the Threlkeld Quarry Mining Museum (the museum will open especially for the course participants)

Cost and booking information

Course fee, including residential accommodation at Higham Hall and all meals (breakfast, lunch and evening meal), is £338. The non-residential course fee is £239, which includes lunch and evening meal.
