Join the North West Regional Group of the Geological Society for a family-friendly talk about dinosaurs, pizza, and a visit to the Manchester Museum with Professor Phil Manning.
Following their successful plesiosaurs family event with Dean Lomax, join Phil Manning from the University of Manchester for a short lecture (approximately 30 minutes, suitable for children aged 7 and up). The lecture will be followed by pizza and an informal trip to see the dinosaurs and other extinct life in Manchester Museum's fossil gallery, accompanied by Phil.
If you have ever wondered how dinosaurs are discovered, extracted, cleaned-up and mounted for display, this is your chance to discover more. Phil will give a whistle-stop tour of some of the sites he has explored around the world over the last 30 years, and he will also offer insight to some of the latest technologies and techniques that are now available to palaeontologists, which help bring long-extinct life into sharp focus in the 21st century.
The event will run from 11.00am to approximately 2.00pm.

Professor Phil Manning, Professor of Natural History in the Department of Earth & Environmental Sciences at the University of Manchester
Phil is additionally the Director of the Interdisciplinary Centre for Ancient Life (ICAL) at Manchester. He is also a Scientist in Residence at the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis (USA), where he is currently co-leading an international team in their work on a new dinosaur-rich site in Wyoming, often called ‘Mission Jurassic’, with the ICAL team from Manchester and colleagues at the Naturalis Biodiversity Centre (Netherlands).
Phil is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and also a Fellow of the Explorer’s Club (New York). When he is not teaching at the University of Manchester, excavating in the field or working at a particle accelerator, you will often find Phil giving talks around the globe on the importance of understanding more about the history of life on Earth.
