The global volcanological community will convene in New Zealand through the International Association of Volcanology and Chemistry of the Earth’s Interior for the IAVCEI 2021 Scientific Assembly. The Scientific Assembly will be held within the Rotorua caldera amongst some of New Zealand’s iconic volcanic landforms and deposits, and in the heart of one of New Zealand’s cultural and touristic centres.

The organisers are developing a diverse and inclusive scientific programme, involving high-profile plenary speakers and a broad suite of session themes. Particular attention will be given towards assisting early career researchers in participating in and contributing to the conference.

A range of exciting and informative scientific field trips will be offered before and after the conference, which will showcase the world-class volcanic landscapes and deposits that New Zealand and its surrounds have to offer. Mid-conference field trips will highlight the volcanic and geothermal geology of the central Taupo Volcanic Zone. The conference will also feature a selection of pre- and post-conference scientific workshops.

Themes

The themes of the IAVCEI 2021 Scientific Assembly encompass the broad disciplines that seek to understand volcanism and magmatism, including natural processes, investigative techniques and the benefits and impacts to society. The scientific programme will be complemented and facilitated by the diverse context of the New Zealand volcanic environment, which will be highlighted across the activities of the scientific assembly.
