The Yorkshire Regional Group will be taking part in the Early Career Geologist Award event again this year. The competition runs first at regional level, with the winner going forward to the national final held at Burlington House. 

The regional heat will begin at 6.00pm on Tuesday 21 January 2020 at the Adelphi, 3-5 Hunslet Road, Leeds, LS10 1JQ.

2020 regional heat finalists

The following three entrants will be taking part in the heat on 21 January:

• Felix Morgan (Jacobs) - ‘A Method of Coal Mining Risk Assessment’
• Maxine Thompson (The Sirius Group) - ‘Kirkstall Forge Remediation and Treatment’
• Charlotte Copley (Lithos Consulting) - ‘Modelling: The Past, Present and Future’

About the competition

Entry criteria

• Entrants must be Fellows of the Geological Society
• Entrants are to have a maximum of 10 years relevant post-graduate (bachelors or equivalent) work experience and to have not yet become Chartered
• Entrants must live/work in the area covered by the Yorkshire Regional Group

Entries

• Maximum 500-word written submission
• Must be geologically themed
• Must be the entrant's own work
• Entries will be shortlisted to three finalists by a panel of judges from the Yorkshire Regional Group

Regional heat

• Finalists to present their topic for a maximum of 15 minutes
• After presentation, five minutes will be allotted to the judges and audience for questions and answers
• Finalists will be judged by a panel of three industry and academic representatives on the quality of their presentation and content
• One winner progresses to the national final

Regional prizes

• A prize of £75 will be awarded to both the winner and the runner up
• The Yorkshire Regional Group will pay for the winner’s travel costs to attend the final

National final

• Takes place in Burlington House, London on Thursday 20 February 2020
• In the final, presentations will be reduced to a maximum of 10 minutes
• Finalists will be judged on the same criteria as in the regional heats
• Five minutes allotted after each presentation for judges' questions and answers
• One national winner who is awarded a trophy and one year’s free membership of the Society
