Running from the hard drive will considerably increase the speed of displays. The DVD size is approximately 1.3 GB of which 1.1 GB is data (the rest is ArcReader and Acrobat installation software). GETTING STARTED Before opening any map files users are advised to open the Acrobat file called Strat_Smith_200_Yr_Legacy.pdf. This file containing a description of the project, notes on the maps, source information and technical details. It also gives installation, hardware and system requirements as well as information on use of the map data in ArcReader. MAPS Map data on this DVD are accessed via three ArcReader (pmf) files: Maps.pmf Smith_Y_Remote_Sensing.pmf Smith_Y_3D.pmf Double-click on any of these files to open ArcReader, users can navigate through the displayed maps using the various tools at the top of the window. For the 2D ArcReader Files (Maps.pmf and Smith_Y_Remote_Sensing.pmf) a table of contents of map layers is shown to the left of the map window. The map layers can be toggled on and off. Maps.pmf contains two different version of William Smith's map, two versions of Greenough's map and John Cary's Turnpike Roads map. The maps are projected to the Bonne projection (which gives a best fit to the map images). A modern outline base map of England and Wales is also given as a reference. Smith_Y_Remote_Sensing.pmf contains a georectified version of the Smith Y map in British National Grid projection. The map is presented with remote sensing data for elevation and hillshade (SRTM) and Landsat. The location of Smith's cross-sections are also shown. Cross-sections can be displayed by clicking the hyperlink tool on the required section location. Smith_Y_3D.pmf contains 3D data, users will see that for this file ArcReader has different navigation tools for displaying the Smith Y map in 3D draped over the SRTM elevation data. User unfamiliar with ArcReader can get help from the pull-down Help Menu, online help is also available. For ArcGIS (ArcView, ArcEditor or ArcInfo) users ArcMap mxd files, ArcGlobe 3dd and ArcScene sxd files are provided in the ArcGIS_user folder. SECTIONS Nine geological sections across England and Wales are included, eight sections are by William Smith and one by Richard Thomas. The sections (which are in Adobe Acrobat format) are located in the Sections folder and can be directly opened by Acrobat if required. MISCELLANEOUS DOCUMENTS Other PDF format files containing the original prospectus for Smith's map, two geological tables and a portrait of William Smith are located in the Miscell_docs folder. ANIMATIONS Two animated video files Bath.mpg and Pickering.mpg are located in the Animations folder. These can be opened by applications such as Windows Media Player or RealPlayer. The animations are fly-throughs of two classic areas on the Smith Map draped over SRTM elevation data and include an audio commentary by Hugh Torrens.
