Awards, Grants and Bursaries

The Geological Society of London has been awarding medals for significant achievement in the Earth sciences since 1831, when its Senior Medal, the Wollaston, was first awarded to William Smith.

Now the Society grants a large range of awards, including medals and funds, every year.  From this page you can see a list of these, and read the citations and replies from award winners since 2001.
The complete list of this year's award winners are now available. You can also view the complete list of award winners by name since 1831.

Information on how to nominate persons for a medal or fund are accessible from subsequent pages.

Research funds

The Society has a number of research funds, which it awards each year in support of geoscientific fieldwork.  Follow the link to find out how to apply for research grants and to download the regulations and guidelines. The Society is pleased to announce a broadening of its Research Grants scheme to include support for undergraduate field mapping projects which until now have been ineligible for support.
