The Lyell Centre

The Geological Society marked its bicentenary with a series of projects to develop a virtual library - the Lyell Centre.

This included a number of new initiatives:
  • The Lyell Collection - The Society has put online the majority of its book and journal content, going back to the launch of the Quarterly Journal of the Geological Society in 1845.
  • The Lyell Room - A new work space has been fitted out in the library at Burlington House, fully equipped with high capacity wireless internet access.
  • Plans are underway to enable access to the Lyell Centre from regional centres.
  • The electronic library catalogue has been completed, replacing the existing card index, and is available online on this site.
  • The GIS Map search - an innovative online GIS (Geographical Information System) has been developed, and is available for use on this site. This allows users to browse the Society's map holdings visually, and to see the geographical location of the results of map catalogue searches.
  • The Society's website has been replaced.  The new site benefits from improved navigation, access for those with visual or motor impairment, and many other new features.  Further elements of the site will be launched throughout 2007.
The Lyell Centre was formally launched on 16 May 2007, in the presence of senior representatives from the Bicentennial Year Platinum sponsors, BP and Shell, whose generous contribution has made these developments possible.
