What do authors get? | Citation Data for Memoirs
The format of Memoirs is more varied than for the Society’s other series, but from 2007, the layout will be more consistent to all for the technical requirements of online publication, and also to provide self-contained PDF files of each chapter, which can be purchased on a pay-per-view basis.
Series Format
The final printed page size is much larger than Special Publications: 310 mm deep by 230 mm wide. Maximum final size of illustrations: 256 mm deep by 190 mm wide. Single column width: 90 mm. It is possible to have 1½ column figures (130 mm) figures with the caption at the side. There are about 1300 words per page. The type size and layout is very similar to JGS. Each chapter must have either an abstract or a chapter summary, depending on the nature of the volume. Each chapter must list the authors and their affiliations, even if it is the same for each chapter. Figures and tables are numbered within a chapter. For some Memoirs, the figures might be numbered Fig. 2.1, etc., but this can be added by the copyeditor if appropriate. Each chapter must have its own reference list.
Submission
Edited Memoirs accepted after March 2008 are handled by our online submission and tracking system. This is similar to, but separate from the journal submission systems. However, the person database is shared with JGS, so if you have submitted or reviewed a paper for JGS, your login information will be the same. The other journals have separate person databases.
Books are not set up in that system until the proposal has been formally accepted by the Books Editorial Committee and some editors choose not to use the system. If the Memoir you that wish to submit to it not listed, please contact the volume editors or the Commissioning Editor.
If the editors of your volume have chosen not to use the system, they will be responsible for informing you of the submission process.
Refereeing and editing
The volume editors will send your paper to at least two referees. The volume editors will handle the papers through the reviewing and scientific editing procedure and deliver the finalized scripts for the volume to the Publishing House in one batch. We expect the reviewing and editing procedure to take about five to six months - but this is dependent upon referees and schedules of the scientific editors.
Production
Once the complete project is with the Publishing House, a production editor will be allocated to the book. The production editor will write to the corresponding authors notifying them of when proofs are due to be dispatched and if there are any problems or costs to be incurred. The paper will be copyedited and then sent to an external typesetter. You will be sent proofs to check the copyediting and typesetting. We do not generally send revised proofs to authors. The production process takes about six to eight months from receipt of the final chapter.
Colour costs
The Publishing House encourages the use of colour where figures will be substantially enhanced. However, it is necessary to make a charge covering all additional costs incurred.
Currently charges are as follows:
- £460 for the first figure in a paper
- £80 for each additional figure in a paper
A form to accompany your paper if you want to have colour figures can be downloaded below:
- Download the colour figures form (.rtf 31 Kb)
If you submitted your paper online, you will be sent a link to this form when your paper is accepted.
If you wish to have a fold-out figures, please contact the volume editor in the first instance.
You can have colour in the online version at no cost provided that we can use the same file as for printing in black and white (i.e. we can just switch the colour off in the print version).
Corresponding authors receive a free internet-quality PDF, which they can forward to their co-author, and the option to purchase paper offprints. Shortly after publication, all authors of each paper will receive a special order form allowing them to buy up to two copies of the whole book at a heavily discounted price, usually one quarter of the list price. Further copies can be purchased at the GSL Fellows’ rate, usually half the list price.
Arrangements may vary for non-edited Memoirs or ones with only a few authors – this will have been agreed on acceptance.
From late 2010, Memoirs will be included in a suitable index in ISI Web of Science (not SCI). Citation counts will be available, and the counts will be included in an author’s h-index. It is also possible to find citation information in the Lyell Collection by accessing the abstract of the paper and using the links at the side (you do not need a paid subscription for that).
