GSL fellows can download articles from JGS, QJEGH or GEEA (when they subscribe*) and from books older than the current or three previous calendar years (the Book Archive**).

Articles from newer titles (published in current or three previous calendar years) or journals to which the fellow does not subscribe can be purchased on a pay-per-view basis at US$30.00 per article on www.lyellcolection.org (purchased articles are available for download for 24 hours) or via the Society Library (please contact the Library for current pricing, email:  library@geolsoc.org.uk).

*Fellows receive one free subscription to a Society journal of their choice (JGS, QJEGH, GEEA or PG). Fellows who subscribe to JGS, QJEGH or GEEA as a free or additional journal will receive access to the full content of the relevant journal. For 2009, additional journals cost £45.00 each. (Note that Petroleum Geoscience remains at www.ingentaconnect.com).

** Fellows can purchase an annual subscription to the Full Book Collection which extends electronic access to all book titles (from the date of publication). For 2009 the subscription fee is £55.00 including VAT.

For a full list of the book titles on the Lyell Collection please go to Publications Catalogues

Will I continue to receive the paper version of my journal?

My organisation is a corporate member of the Geological Society of London – do we automatically receive access to the Lyell Collection?

No, the only way to access the Lyell Collection content is to use pay-per-view or purchase a library/institutional subscription.

I am a member of the Geological Society of America how do I continue to access JGS?

Please contact the GSA membership office for a username and password to enable access. Email: gsaservice@geosociety.org

Non-member/organisation Lyell Collection access queries

What is included in a Lyell Collection Complete subscription?

A 2009 Lyell Collection Complete subscription includes Journal of the Geological Society, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis and Geological Society of London Special Publications, Memoirs and Engineering Geology Special Publications. (Print copies published in 2009 and on-line access to all content).  From 2009 access to the Transactions of the Geological Society is also included.

Corporate subscribers should note that the subscription to a Lyell Collection product entitles them to access in all offices within one country (by IP addresses submitted by the subscribers’ administrator). A separate subscription is needed for each country in which access is required.
(An academic subscription authorizes use at a localized site.)

Although there is most interest in the Lyell Collection Complete, it is possible to subscribe only to the Special Publications. However, Memoirs and Engineering Geology Special Publications will only be available to those subscribing to the Lyell Collection Complete (titles in these two series are published infrequently and do not lend themselves to separate subscriptions).

What is the cost to subscribe in 2009?

Go to www.geolsoc.org.uk > Publications > Journals to view non-member subscription rates for 2009 (pdf).
http://www.geolsoc.org.uk/publications/journals

Lyell Collection product subscription rates are charged by the geographic location of the end user (not by the delivery address for the print copies). All UK end user subscription rates include VAT.  EU VAT registered end users are not subject to the VAT charge (when their VAT number is included with order and payment).

Journal of the Geological Society, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis and Special Publications are available as Plus or Current subscriptions – what does this mean?

A Current subscription includes print copies published in the current year and on-line access to the current and four previous calendar years..

A Plus subscription includes print copies published in the current year and on-line access to all current and archival content.

The Plus subscription options are recommended by the Geological Society as they offer the most complete record of published content at only modest additional cost.

How do I activate my institutional/company subscription?

Go to www.lyellcollection.org > Subscriptions > Activate your institutional subscription
http://www.lyellcollection.org/cgi/activate/ibasic

Please enter your subscriber id. This is listed on receipts (and it should be the same as the number used for activation at Ingenta but with an uppercase “i” at the end e.g. 9527615I). You can then set up an administrator username and password and provide the relevant IP addresses for access. Please keep a note of the username and password so you can make amendments to contact details and IP addresses in the future.

If you do not know your subscriber id please contact your agent or email sales@geolsoc.org.uk with your full postal address and order reference.

What happens to access if my organisation/company does not renew its annual subscription?

A subscriber for 2008 (for Plus, Current or Complete) who does not renew for 2009 would receive perpetual access to the content published during 2008 (this is not automatic and must be requested at the time of cancellation).

A pre-2008 subscription does not entitle a user to access Lyell hosted past content. For subscriptions previous to 2008 the print copy was the copy of record and electronic access was a free add-on. Once a subscription lapsed, electronic access was switched off.

Can my institution/company opt out of receiving the print copies or only purchase on-line access?

For 2009 subscribers will be sent print copies published during the subscription year. In future years you may be able to opt out of receiving the print copies and purchase an on-line only subscription.

How does my institution/company obtain a free 30 day trial?

Please email sales@geolsoc.org.uk with a preferred start date for the trial together with a contact name and email address, institution/company name, mailing address and a contact telephone number. (Trials are not available to individuals).

Can you provide a copy of the license terms?

In the absence of a separate license agreement the Geological Society of London adheres to the SERU guidelines, as published on the NISO SERU website: http://www.niso.org/publications/rp - NISO RP-7-2008, SERU: A Shared Electronic Resource Understanding (pdf)

My institution already subscribes to GeoScienceWorld (GSW) – is content the same?

There is some overlap between the journal content on Lyell Collection and GSW. However, no book content is available on GSW and the deep journal archival material will only be available via the Lyell Collection. Subscriber ids for Lyell Collection subscriptions will not work at GSW (although GSW is also hosted by HighWire Press.)

Is there a limit to the number of simultaneous users on one institutional/company subscription?

For institutional subscribers, there are no usernames or passwords to remember for access, and there is currently no limit on the number of readers from your institution who may access the Lyell Collection simultaneously.

Any user connecting from an authorized computer on your institutional network will be allowed access to the Lyell Collection. When someone attempts to access content, our host’s server checks to see if the requesting computer is within the list of internet IP address provided by a subscribing institution. If it is, the reader will be able to use all those services enabled for institutional readers.

What is my IP address?

Click on Feedback (at the bottom of each page), scroll down to the bottom of the page and your IP address will be listed in bold text.

How can I tell if my institution/company has subscribed to the Lyell Collection?

If your institution has a subscription to all or part of the Lyell Collection, you'll automatically have access to the full text display and PDFs. You should see the company or institution name in the grey bar at the top of the page confirming you're recognized as part of an institution.

My institution has a subscription to all or part of the Lyell Collection but I'm not able to see the full text of articles. I'm prompted for a username and password. Why is this happening and what should I do?

The IP address for your machine is not being recognized by the site host. This failure is caused by one of four things:
  • Your institutional subscription has not yet been activated
  • The person who activated the online subscription did not register all the required IP addresses for your institution
  • The person who activated the online subscription does not realize that some subnets of your institution are routed through a proxy server
  • The subscription taken by your institution does not include the journal or book you are trying to access.
Talk to your librarian or administrator, and let them know you are having trouble. If they cannot solve the problem please use the Feedback link at the bottom of each webpage to provide details of the problem.
(Feedback queries are answered by the site host HighWire Press in the USA.)

My library purchases print copies of titles in the Lyell Collection but I can't get access to the content online.

If your institution subscribes to any of the Lyell Collection content then online access is enabled automatically, so the reason you cannot get online access is that your institution has not yet activated its institutional subscription or your IP address is not registered. Please notify your librarian.

It is possible to purchase the Special Publications, Memoirs and Engineering Geology Special Publications in print only form, but the entitlement to online access to this content is conditional upon a subscription being purchased. If no subscription covering all Lyell Collection content has been purchased please talk to your librarian and encourage them to do so.

How can I access the Lyell Collection if I am not a GSL member and I don't have access through an institutional subscription?

If your institution does not subscribe, you can choose to join the Geological Society and access much of the online content as a member benefit, or subscribe to content as an individual non-member. If you do not wish to do either of these you may purchase content on a pay-per-view basis.
