Can you print black and white from colour photographs?
Yes, we do it all the time.
My paper is likely to be much longer than 12 pages - would you be prepared to consider it?
We can only really decide that after it has been refereed. The editors may be prepared to comment on papers over 22 pages before refereeing. Contact us by e-mail, including the abstract, and we will advise you.
I'm not sure if the subject is suitable for the Journal - would you consider it?
Contact us by e-mail, including the abstract, and we will let you know.
The editors seem to be taking a long time to get back to me - why is this?
The Journal is edited by unpaid editors, who have full-time paid jobs. And like any high-quality journal, we are totally dependent on the goodwill of unpaid referees. We do our best to ensure that manuscripts don't fall behind, but sometimes delays are unavoidable, especially during holiday/fieldwork seasons. Our average turn around times are very efficient.
My graphics package doesn't let me save files in EPS format. Can you use the files?
All figures must eventually be saved as EPS or tiff - if you can't do it, neither can our typesetters. Most modern graphics packages do allow you to do this though, so maybe you are not looking in the right place. Try 'exporting' rather than 'save'.
Can I have colour illustrations?
Yes, but you will be expected to pay the cost of printing them. The prices may seem high, but that is how much it costs us.
What if I can't afford it?
If your figures absolutely have to be in colour, we do have a small budget to help authors who have limited funds. The Subject Editor will need to make a case to the Chief Editor (after the paper has been refereed).
Can I have a foldout figure?
Yes, but they are very expensive because they have to be inserted by hand and the Journal has quite a high print run. A two-page-width full-colour one costs more than £1000. The cost is related to the number of folds. If you would like one, let us know the final size and whether it is colour or black and white. If it is more than a metre long, we will not be able to use our normal printer.
Can I use figures from my paper in another paper?
Yes, but you need to get formal permission from the Geological Society. We need to know where it is going to be published. If the other publication will appear first, then you need to get their permission to use it in QJEGH.
My employer wants to keep the copyright of my paper - is that OK?
Yes, there is a section of the copyright assignment form for this. It gives us permission to publish the paper and non-exclusive permission to deal with requests from third parties. We cannot handle special conditions for copyright - we don't have the resources to check every request we get in that much detail.
