Consultation documents received by the Society are listed here. Those to which the External Relations Committee has decided to try to coordinate a response are marked with an asterisk (*). All Society responses will also be published here, as soon as permission is granted by the agency to which the advice is submitted.

*Research Excellence Framework


The Higher Education Funding Council (HEFCE) is currently consulting on a new system for assessing the quality of research in UK Higher Education institutions, the Research Excellence Framework. Views are sought from the higher education sector as well as organisations with an interest in the use and impact of research – from the private, public and third sectors. Further information about the consultation can be found here.

The deadline for the consultation is Wednesday 16 December. Fellows wishing to contribute to the Society's response should send their views to nic.bilham@geolsoc.org.uk by the end of Monday 14 December 2009.

*Postgraduate skills needs for the environmental science sector


The Natural Environment Research Council, in conjunction with the Environment Research Funder's Forum (ERFF), is launching a public consultation to determine future skills needs in the environmental sciences sector.

* Guidelines on Scientific Analysis in Policy Making

In October 2009, the Government response to “Putting science and engineering at the heart of government policy” was published. One of the commitments made in the response was to update the Guidelines on Scientific Analysis in Policy-Making.
