GSL MSc Course Accreditation Scheme

The Geological Society is pleased to announce the introduction of an accreditation scheme for taught MSc programmes.

The scheme sets out to recognise MSc programmes that offer advanced professional and scientific training in a specific area of the geosciences. In addition, the Accreditation Panel will be seeking to establish that a graduate taking an accredited MSc will be gaining experience and insights directly relevent to a later award of Chartered Geologist (or Chartered Scientist) (CGeol/CSci) status. In recognition of this applications for CGeol/CSci who have an accredited MSc will benifit from an accelerated route, subject to satisfying all other criteria. Similar benifits will be open to students with an accredited MSc converting from their first degrees in non-geoscience programmes.

Accreditation will  provide peer-reviewed certification of the standard and scope of professional and scientific training offered by MSc programmes. It will give universities, grant awarding bodies and employers confidence in the value of the programme in producing well trainied graduates for employment in the geosciences. The recognition of an MSc programme by accreditation will also be a valuable aid for students in choosing their locus of study, particularly for overseas students.

In the first instance, we wish to prioritise courses from which graduates will wish to aspire to CGeol status in their employment in addition, programmes must have graduated two cohorts of students before an application can be considered.

The Accreditation Ofiicer, Dr Colin Scrutton (Colin.Scrutton@dunelm.org.uk), will be pleased to respond to queries and to supply an application pack which will be sent as an email attachment. Universities interested in applying can download the application form below.
