Access for Libraries and Institutions

The Geological Society of London has retained a flexible approach to library access to its content. A variety of library subscription and access options are available to ensure that every institution can access the material it needs.
Lyell Collection title subscriptions are electronic by default. The electronic version is the version of record and subscribers requiring print copies should select the "Online+print" option.
Subscribers to Journal of the Geological Society, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis, Petroleum Geoscience, Scottish Journal of Geology, Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society, Journal of Micropalaeontology and Special Publications have a choice of subscription options. Each title is available as an Online option, giving subscribers access to all published content including the deep archive, or Online+print which also provides the print copies published during the subscription year.
Journal of the Geological Society, Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology, Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis, Scottish Journal of Geology, Journal of Micropalaeontology, Petroleum Geoscience, Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society and Special Publications can be subscribed to individually. However, libraries can also subscribe to the Lyell Collection Complete - a package of content containing all the listed journals, Petroleum Geology Conferences, Transactions of the Geological Society, the Special Publications, Engineering Geology Special Publications and Geological Society Memoirs.
Subscribers to the Lyell Collection Complete package receive access to the complete published archive. The Online+print option also includes the print copies published during the subscription year. A third subscription option is LCC Online+SP print which includes print copies of the Special Publications published in the subscription year.
Institutional subscribers to the Lyell Collection Complete and to the Special Publications can view the full text of all Online First articles, but they will not enjoy perpetual access rights to this content unless the final SP volume is published within their subscribed-to calendar year. Institutional subscribers to individual journal titles will not be able to view the full text of Online First Special Publication articles.
The Lyell Collection Complete package is recommended by the Geological Society. The price includes a discount on the price of the separate components.
A pre-2008 subscription does not entitle a user to access Lyell hosted past content. For subscriptions previous to 2008 the print copy was the copy of record and electronic access was a free add-on. Once a subscription lapsed, electronic access was switched off.
Subscribers for years from 2008 onwards enjoy the right of perpetual access to their subscribed-to content published in final volume form (note that Online First articles not published in final volume form by the end of a calendar year are not included in this right to perpetual access). For example, a subscriber for the years 2008 to 2011 who does not renew for 2012 would receive perpetual access to the content published from 2008 to 2011 (this is not automatic and must be requested at the time of cancellation) – but would not receive access to Online First articles available online on 31 December 2011, but not yet published in final volume form.
The Geological Society of London does not issue or require the agreement of a formal license for institutional access to the Lyell Collection. Rather, it has chosen to adopt the SERU (Shared E-Resource Understanding) approach. Please see terms of use for libraries and institutions for more information.
The Lyell Collection Complete has been priced to include all content at a rate which is discounted compared to the purchase price of individual components and the Geological Society believes this represents excellent value for money. No additional discounts will be negotiated for Lyell Collection content.
Non-subscribing institutions can still access articles by selecting the pay-per-view option, which is available for all Lyell Collection content.
