Journal Cancellations

During 2010, Council asked a group led by former President Peter Styles to conduct a thorough review of the Society’s library collections and services. This included user surveys, analysis of usage data, consultation with the Fellowship, and discussions with other organisations about their library and information strategies. You can read the full report at www.geolsoc.org.uk/libraryreview. In the June issue of Geoscientist Nic Bilham provided an update on how the recommendations in the review are being carried forward.

In line with the recommendations of the review, Council agreed to reduce the net costs of the library by £35k in 2012, through a combination of new income and savings on expenditure. In order to achieve this, the Library Advisory Committee identified a number of journals subscriptions for cancellation, based on criteria agreed by Council, including low usage and high cost-per-usage. The candidate journals were reviewed by the Information Management Committee and their cancellation has been approved by Council.

The following journals will be cancelled:
  • Bulletin d’information des geologues du bassin de Paris
  • Contributions to mineralogy & petrology
  • Coral reefs
  • Geodinamica acta
  • Journal of seismic exploration
  • Mathematical geosciences
  • Near surface geophysics
  • Surveys in geophysics
  • Palaeontographica. Abt. B: Palaophytologie
